Itinerary
In the morning (before 9am), our private guide and car pick you up at the hotel and depart to visit:
Wat Sisaket, the city’s oldest temple. Dates to 1818, Wat Sisaket is the most important heritage temple now standing in Laos. It houses thousands of Buddha images from many countries, long lost architectural styles, sculptures, and paintings;
Wat Prakeo, former royal temple of the Lao monarchy and originally built in 1565, is home to the Emerald Buddha image, Buddhist sculptures are displayed along the perimeter wall, including a 6th to 9th century Dvaravati-style stone Buddha and several standing and sitting Buddhas.
Pha That Luang – the heart of “Lane Xang Kingdom” is a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the centre of the city of Vientiane, Laos. It is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos. The architecture of the building includes many references to Lao culture and identity, and so has become a symbol of Lao nationalism.
On the way to the famous and sacred structure of That Luang Stupa, stop to take some pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument – a war monument was built between 1957 and 1968. The Patuxay was dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France. It is also called Patuxay Arch or the Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane as it resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. However, it is typically Laotian in design, decorated with mythological creatures such as the kinnari (half-female, half-bird).
In the afternoon, we take a short drive out of the city to visit the Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) is an open-air sculpture park with giant sculptures of Buddha and Hindu deities. Located 25km southeast of Vientiane, the park was founded in 1958 by monk and sculpture artist, Bunleua Sulila.
